RSF Drone Strike Leaves Over Dozen Dead in S. Sudan
The Sudan Doctors Network, a frontline volunteer organization, confirmed that the dead included five children and two women, while seven more children were counted among the injured. The group attributed the strike jointly to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, underscoring the coordinated nature of the assault.
The network painted a dire picture of conditions on the ground, warning that the attack was carried out "as the city has been subjected to intense shelling for the second consecutive day amid severe shortages of medical staff and supplies." Residential areas bore the heaviest toll. "The shelling was concentrated in residential neighborhoods, destroying more than eight houses," eyewitnesses told media.
In a contrasting account, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) asserted that their troops successfully repelled a separate RSF assault on the city the same day, claiming their forces engaged in "fierce" battles that resulted in 36 enemy combat vehicles destroyed and four more captured. The SAF had previously declared on Jan. 26 that it had taken control of Dilling — South Kordofan's second-largest city — following a siege exceeding two years.
The RSF has yet to issue any statement addressing the latest developments.
The strikes are part of a broader and intensifying campaign across the Kordofan region, where escalating drone attacks and artillery shelling have driven up civilian casualties and compounded what international observers describe as a deepening humanitarian catastrophe. The violence unfolds against the backdrop of a wider war between the SAF and the RSF that erupted in mid-April 2023 — a conflict that, by international estimates, has killed tens of thousands and forced millions to flee their homes both within Sudan and across its borders.
